Matthew O’Brien signs new deal for 2024

Drogheda United is thrilled to announce that Matthew O’Brien has extended his contract with the club.

The 20-year-old joined his hometown team at the beginning of the 2023 season, having spent the previous three seasons with Longford Town.

O’Brien was part of the first team squad throughout the season. He emerged as a starter for the final seven games of the season, and made a total of 11 appearances.

“I’m delighted to be back next year and can’t wait to get going again. It’s a long off season, and I’m hoping I can build on the good end to last season.

“I knew from the start that I wouldn’t be the first choice in the team. I kept sticking at it, working hard throughout the season until I got my opportunity. I started seven games in a row then where I didn’t come off. I was delighted to play at the end of the season and I can’t wait to get going again,” O’Brien said.

Residing within walking distance of Weavers Park, O’Brien explained his pride at representing his hometown club.

“The atmosphere and everything about playing here, I enjoy it much more than playing elsewhere because it’s my own club.

“I’ve noticed the significant increase in season ticket sales already. This place will be packed every week. Last year was fantastic, but I think the atmosphere will be even better this year.”

“I was up at the sleepout with the Ultras recently too, it was freezing. I don’t know how they did it. They raised a substantial amount of money for charity, so credit to them,” O’Brien expressed.

Manager Kevin Doherty also explained how he sees O’Brien as an example to young players looking to break into the first team.

“Matthew embodies the type of player we desire at the club – youthful, eager, and full of positive energy. He’s a local lad too which I’m really happy with, it really means something for him to play for Drogheda United.

“His performances towards the end of the season after he got into the team were excellent and he’s an example to any young players looking to break into our team,” Doherty explained.
