Matthew O’Brien signs for Drogheda United

Drogheda United are delighted to announce the signing of Matthew O’Brien.

The midfielder, from Drogheda, joins the club after spending the last three seasons with Longford Town.

O’Brien first joined Longford as a 16-year-old from Leinster Senior League side Phoenix FC, ahead of the 2020 season.

He made his senior debut for Longford later that season, scoring his first goal in a 3-0 win over Cabinteely.

O’Brien scored twice for Longford in 2022, against Waterford and Galway United, and now joins his hometown club, completing Kevin Doherty’s squad for the 2023 League of Ireland Premier Division season.

“I’m delighted to have Matthew signed. Matthew’s a really exciting young player, and has good experience, and played plenty of games already in the league. He’s another local player in the squad aswell which is important too. It’s his local club and that can add that little bit extra for players and the supporters.”
