Drogheda United are delighted to announce that Luke Heeney has signed a new deal with the club.
Heeney is the fourth player to be announced as part of Tim Clancy’s 2021 Premier Division squad.
The Bellewstown native first joined the club ahead of the 2019 season from St. Patrick’s Athletic and went on to make 30 appearances in his first year in senior football.
Heeney re-signed for his local side in 2020, and despite missing part of the season through injury, the midfielder returned to play a vital part in the run in.
The 21-year-old finished the season with 9 appearances and scored Drogheda’s second goal against Cabinteely on the final day of the season, heading in from close range to seal the league win and promotion back to the Premier Division.
“Signing back was a no brainer for me. Playing for my local side in the Premier is something I’m really looking forward to. I also really enjoyed playing under Tim and Kev the last two seasons,” Heeney said.
“It was very strange with no fans last year. We all missed them big time so when we get them back it will definitely be a massive boost for us next year especially in a packed out United Park.
“The fans are great and really do give you that extra push on matchdays so the sooner they are let back in the better for sure.
“I think going into our first season in the Premier the goal would be to establish ourselves up there and build from there really.
“Personally for myself, it’d be to stay injury free as last season I missed the middle part of the year due to a bad injury and that was difficult,” he explained.
