Gary Deegan signs new deal for 2024

Drogheda United is thrilled to announce that captain Gary Deegan has signed a new deal with the club.

The 36-year-old first joined the club ahead of the 2021 season from Shelbourne.

His football career has seen the midfielder play for Coventry City, Hibernian, Northampton, Southend, Shrewsbury and Cambridge United in the UK, alongside a number of League of Ireland clubs.

The 2023 season saw Deegan make 38 appearances, taking the midfielder over the 100 appearance milestone for the club.

“It was a no brainer. I’ve been at the club for three years, it’s a healthy working relationship so why not continue with that.

“I think every club wants to try and improve every year and we are no different. We’ve made some positive, encouraging early signings which is good, and I’m looking forward to working with the new lads too.

“There seems to be a nice buzz around the place at the moment. Performances on the pitch help but it’s a good time for the club now,” Deegan expressed.

Manager Kevin Doherty also expressed his delight after Deegan signed for what will be his fourth season with the club, stating, “I am delighted to have Gary back for next season. Gary is an absolute leader both on and off the pitch but also a fantastic player who has been massive for us over the past few seasons.”
