Our second Fan Q&A of the season sees Lewis Shaw talking to Drogheda United fan Fergus Grimes.
Lewis: What are your thoughts on the club and how big of an impact has the club got on the town?
Fergus: “Drogheda is the biggest town in Ireland and this is the biggest sports team within the town. This brings people together within the community and has personally made me meet good people along with making more friends”.
“I feel Conor Hoey and the Directors have done an excellent job in the last year and a half. The club are making big steps ahead. And I genuinely cannot wait to see if this match Drogheda United vs Trabzonspor happens, hopefully it will happen in the summer”.
Lewis: You’ve been following the Drogs for quite some time now, what are some of your favourite memories of the club?
Fergus: “I’ve seen the good and bad times with Drogheda United. I’ve seen us get beaten in Oriel Park 6-0. lose the FAI Cup Final, losing in the play-offs and been relegated.”
“I’ve also seen us gain promotion and seen us compete in Europe. One of my best Drogs memories was when we won the League and the FAI Cup. My favourite memory however that sticks out is beating Dundalk 3-2 in 2012. Drogheda went down 2-0 in the first half. John Sullivan scored the winner in the 90th minute.”
Lewis: Who is your favourite player, past and present? And why?
Fergus: “My favourite player at the moment is Chris Lyons. Chris is passionate and plays for the crest, the club and the fans and most importantly he scores us really important goals.”
“I’ve also enjoyed Derek Prendergast down through the years. Del is a leader on the pitch and a talker who leads by example, I look forward to watching him this season and hopefully he will add the experience that is badly needed in order for us to go up this season.”
“My all-time favourite player is Ryan Brennan. A local lad from the town who contributed a lot to the club when was here and he catches my attention with his skills.”
Lewis: What are your thoughts on the season ahead?
Fergus: “On the season ahead, I fancy either ourselves or Longford to go up. And I feel we have the players technically, and if the players play to the standards that Tim has set then we will go up. We have a strong defence, we have a balance in midfield and have goals in our team between Wixted, Doyle, Meaney and Lyons.”
Lewis: The fans have a massive part to play in our club. What would your advice be to new fans coming on board?
Fergus: “New supporters coming on board should be proud to support the best team in Louth. To support your team through thick and thing is something to be proud of. I’m absolutely honoured and privileged to be wearing the badge around the town in my Drogheda United gear.”
Thanks to Fergus Grimes for taking his time out to participate in this weeks Drogs Q&A Session.
