Evan Weir signs on loan from Walsall

Drogheda United are pleased to announce the loan signing of defender Evan Weir from Walsall Football Club.

21-year-old Weir, who has made 56 appearances in claret and blue, will remain with the club until the summer of 2024.

The defender was named Fans’ Young Player of the Year in his first season with the club, where he made 29 appearances, scoring four goals. Weir made a further 27 appearances last season, showing his versatility, playing both at full-back and as a centre-half.

Manager Kevin Doherty expressed his excitement at retaining the services of Weir for longer than expected.

“Evan had quite a bit of attention this offseason, there were a lot of clubs after him here around the league. It’s a massive opportunity for him but it’s great for us as well. I didn’t want to see him playing against us, and he’ll be here in a Drogheda shirt for nearly two thirds of the season.

“This shows the progress of our club, and the link between ourselves and Walsall. The reality is, there were a lot of clubs who were in for Evan and we would have lost him, so this shows the benefits for us. It’s a relationship that will grow over time between the two clubs,” Doherty explained.

“Evan is another example of a player who has come to us under the radar, and done really well. He’s had two excellent seasons with us, he’s grown as a player and become an important player for us.

“He hit the ground running when we signed him, you could see the potential he had straight away. I’m glad he’s taken the path he has, because I think it’s the right move for him, but it’s great to have Evan at the club until the summer,” Doherty expressed.

Weir also explained how he is looking forward to continuing his spell with the club.

“When the offer came through that I was able to stay with Drogheda until the summer, it was a no brainer. It’s a great club, run by brilliant people, with amazing fans.

“It’s been amazing, I’ve loved it. From the moment I stepped foot in the club, to where I am now, I couldn’t have picked a better club to join. Everyone has helped me develop, from the players, right through to the staff and the fans, everyone has been brilliant the whole way through.

“I’m buzzing now that I can stay here until the summer, hit the ground running in pre-season and give everything I can until the summer.

“Kevin has brought in a lot of quality players. Conor Kane and Andy Quinn are back, Jack Keaney is a brilliant player who I played with before at UCD, and Frantz up front.

“These are all top quality players and I hope now we can push on. I don’t see why we can’t. Hopefully it’ll be a nice start to the year, and we can get a few wins under our belt early,” Weir said.
