Evan Weir signs for Drogheda United

Drogheda United are delighted to announce the signing of full-back Evan Weir.

The 19-year-old played with UCD’s underage sides in 2018 and 2019 before making the step up to the first team in 2020.

The teenager also netted four goals in 2020, including a brace in a 2-2 draw against Galway United in October.

2021 saw Evan remain a regular for UCD, involved in the Ireland U-21 set up, with a call-up to the provisional squad for the game against Montenegro before he finished the season with Maynooth University Town.

“After I’d left UCD due to non-football related reasons, I went to Maynooth University Town. I was looking for a Premier Division team.

“I was talking with James Clarke, who is on my Maynooth scholarship team in college, and he spoke good about the club. I’ve a few mates there aswell and they always speak good about the club.

“I was looking at it, if I could get a call or anything I’d say yeah and Daire contacted me and said they were interested. I straight away said, listen, I’m going.

“My two years with UCD were amazing, I loved every minute of it. I feel myself now, to progress as a footballer, I need to go in to the Premier Division and see what it’s like.”

“Getting in, playing, getting as many games under my belt as I can and try to get a few goals and assists in there aswell,” Weir said.

Drogheda manager Kevin Doherty also expressed his delight at securing Weir’s signature.

“Evan is a terrific talent and we’re delighted to secure his signature.  He’s been involved in the Irish U21 set-up recently and we think he has a big future.”
