Darragh Markey signs new deal for 2024

Drogheda United is thrilled to announce that midfielder Darragh Markey has signed a new contract with the club.

Markey is heading into his fourth season with the club having joined ahead of the 2021 season from St. Patrick’s Athletic.

“I’m delighted to be back. It’s my fourth season here and I’ve loved every minute of it. From the first time I stepped into the club, I’ve felt at home. Every year I’ve been so lucky to have been joined by a great group of lads too, and that can’t be taken for granted,” Markey said.

“Kevin has got some well deserved plaudits for the job he has done. We want to progress, it’s an exciting time for the club, and Kevin has recruited well, as he has done every year since he’s been at the club.

The 26-year-old has made 99 appearances in his three seasons in claret and blue to date.

The midfielder scored three times in all competitions last season, with his last minute winning goal at home to St. Patrick’s Athletic in June becoming one of the standout moments of the season.

“Kevin told me that he really wanted me to stay. I’m 26 now, and you really don’t feel the years going by but it’s four years now and it’s flown by. That’s always a good sign, when time flies when you are enjoying yourself. It didn’t take a lot of thought from myself because Kevin made me feel so wanted.”

“I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t get my frame (for 100 appearances) at the awards recently! 100 appearances is a great milestone to hit at any club. I don’t take for granted how much I’ve enjoyed my time here so hopefully there’s many more appearances to come,” Markey expressed.

Manager Kevin Doherty also expressed his delight at Darragh Markey’s new deal with the club.

“I’m delighted to have Darragh back. He’s an important player for us with the way we play. Once again, he had plenty of other options so I’m thrilled he’s with us. He’s a big player for us, and will be going forward.

“We’ve such a good connection here between players, volunteers and supporters and the players love playing for us. That is a massive part of it. It’s something that Darragh values very highly. It’ll be a massive year for him again next year.”
