MU15 4-1 vs Sligo Rovers
Drogheda United U15s played their 1st home game of the 2nd phase, and the visitors were Sligo Rovers. Both teams started very well, and the game was very entertaining, with both sides playing great football.
Drogheda took the lead through a penalty from Conor Hassett, who took his penalty very well. Excellent 1st half displays from the back 5….James Pullen GK coming out of his goal twice, making great decisions to clear the lines. CBs Ewan Fox and Aaron McQuaid winning their duels, and Patrick Bourke and Alex Curran both working hard at FB. Great defensive midfield displays from Evan Carberry and Alex Carainica in the middle of the park.
Hassett and Cillian Gunnery combined well in the forward position. Evan Kelly on the left was a real threat going forward while helping out his FB in defence. The Drogs went in 1-0 at halftime and just shaded it.
The second half started, and once again, both teams played lovely football. Sligo got back into the game on the 77th minute. Drogheda disappointed to concede. But the lads showed great character and continued to work hard. The impact of subs Adam Johnstone, Sam Eglington, Jack McDonnell, Sean Hegarty, Gearoid Hannigan and u14s player Niall McCoy coming on in the second to help the Drogs increase their lead.
Great second half goals from Adam Johnstone, Gearoid Hannigan and the ever attacking Jack Richmond saw the lads win out comfortably in the end 4-1. Next up for the boys is a home game in the Cup next Saturday against Waterford, kick off 1pm.
MU17 4-2 vs Sligo Rovers
Our MU17s continued their campaign away to Sligo Rovers in The Showgrounds this afternoon.
A bright start saw Drogheda go ahead after 7 minutes with Richard Nwosu finishing from an assist by Excel Imade. Continued pressure from the visitors saw them extend their lead after 22 minutes with Tunde Anunlopo scoring from range.
The game was end to end after that with both teams having chances to score and the hosts got a goal back on 37 minutes which meant Drogheda went in at the break 2-1 up.
Drogheda went close to extending their lead a minute into the second half with Frank Foran hitting the crossbar with a header. Again it was an end to end game and the hosts got an equaliser on 67 minutes after the referee inexplicably failed to give a foul on Joey Hegarty in the build up to the goal.
However, Drogheda reacted brilliantly to the equaliser and went back in front on 71 minutes through Richard Nwosu with Cian O’Leary providing the assist. Cian O’Leary was the provider again on 72 minutes with Tadgh O’Brien scoring this time.
Both teams hit the woodwork as the game continued at a high intensity for the remaining 20 minutes but Drogheda saw the game out to win deservedly 4-2.
The MU17s have no competitive game next weekend and resume their league campaign away to Mayo FC on the 13th July.
