MU17 vs Finn Harps
The MU17s continued their season in the MDL this evening against Finn Harps. A fairly even first half resulted in the teams being level at 0-0 going in at half-time. The home team upped their performance from the start of the second half with them having multiple chances to go ahead with Cian O’Leary having a chance cleared off the line and Richard Nwosu having two good chances saved by the Finn Harps goalkeeper.
Gary Comiskey-Gallagher deservedly made it 1-0 on 66 mins following a parry by the Finn Harps Goalkeeper. Gary then won a penalty soon after which Richard Nwosu converted on 68 mins. A fine team move resulted in the MU17s going further ahead on 88 minutes with Matthew McCloskey scoring with a fantastic goal from a brilliant pass by Excel Imade, and Jack Richmond nearly put the hosts further ahead with a chance just going by the post late on.
The home team were disappointed with not keeping a clean sheet with Finn Harps scoring in the 91st min from a free kick that should have been cleared. The MU17s take a break from league action for a week with a friendly against local side Duleek Youths next weekend and recommencing their league campaign away to Derry City on the 27th April.
MU20 vs Finn Harps
The MU20 side travelled to Finn Park to face Finn Harps, and came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline in a closely fought encounter.
Finn Harps scored the only goal of the game from a well taken free kick in the first half.
WU17 vs Bohemians
Drogheda United WU17 lost 4-1 to Bohemians. The scoreline was a little harsh on Drogheda but credit to Bohemians as they finished their chances when they got them.
Both teams worked hard in an enjoyable game and Drogheda Utd will be encouraged by their strong finish to the game with Charley Coogan getting a goal and the number of chances created.
The next league game for the girls is May 3 away to local rivals Dundalk.
MU15 vs Finn Harps
Drogheda started excellently and got their reward from a corner kick. Gearoid Hannigan found Evan Kelly at the back post and converted to put us 1-0 up. Jayden Kearns found Conor Hassett with an excellent through ball, and Hassett finished well. Drogheda 2-0 up on 25 minutes and playing really well. Unfortunately, we lost Adam Johnstone, who was having a great game playing the number 10 role.
Finn Harps are a strong physical team and played to their strengths, scoring from a corner (possible foul on our GK James Pullen) but 2-1 at halftime. Drogheda conceded from another corner 3 minutes into the 2nd half. A few substitutions were made with Cillian Gunnery, Sam Eglington and Alex Carainica coming into the middle of the park and Alex Curran coming on left mid to try and get the Drogs going again. Finn Harps playing long balls putting the two CBs Aaron McQuaid and Ben Doyle under pressure…the lads were excellent.
Finn Harps scored another set piece on the hour mark to take the lead against the run of play. Sam Eglington had an excellent free kick saved. Drogheda now pushing for an equaliser and in the 90th minute Finn Harps scored. Very unlucky for the boys, with a break next week. The lads play Derry at home on the 26th of April.
MU14 vs Finn Harps
Drogheda United MU14s hosted Finn Harps at Navan on a day that reminded us of the vagaries of the month of April which saw sunshine, sleeting rain, breezy weather which could be a metaphor for how the game was to play out.
Drogheda started on the front foot and took the game to Finn Harps with fine attacking play down both flanks which had Finn Harps defending deep in their penalty area. However, just as the changing nature of April where one minute it is all sunshine and then changes, Finn Harps were to take the lead on 10 mins.
Despite this early setback it was Drogheda who responded the better of the sides and continued to attack and were denied an equaliser with a fine save by the Finn Harps goalkeeper. The start of the second period saw Drogheda stand off and Finn Harps were quick to take advantage to stretch their lead. Despite this setback Drogheda went into the third period with renewed intensity and their attacking efforts were rewarded with a goal on 72 mins from an excellent strike from just inside the penalty which flew across the despairing dive of the Finn Harps goal keeper.
Finn Harps to their credit responded and again stretched their lead. However there was a renewed energy from Drogheda United who played some excellent attacking football using the wide areas to great effect and prevented Finn Harps from trying to build up. This willingness and inventiveness in attack was to lead to a second Drogheda goal on 80 mins. However the deficit was just too much to bridge and with Drogheda committed to trying to reduce the deficit, Finn Harps took advantage and stretched their lead further to run out winners in the end. Next game away to Derry on 27th April.
