Under 17s Match Report: Drogheda United 1-3 Athlone Town

By Jim MacArdle

Drogheda United under 17s conceded 3 goals in the final 15 minutes on Saturday to lose out 3-1 in United Park.

Drogheda got off to a great start after 12 minutes when Callum Leonard finished calmly after a great run and through ball from Frank Cabreley. That is Callum’s second goal of the week having scored the winner against Longford on Monday evening.

Both sides missed chances with Ben Murphy making some excellent saves in the United goal. However Drogheda missed 2 great chances in the 43rd minute and these missed chances probably made the difference in the end.

The second half was much the same with Athlone forcing a number of corner kicks, one of which produced the save of the season from Ben Murphy, pushing a certain goal onto the post.

These corners eventually told as Athlone benefited from the excellent delivery and scored 3 times in 10 minutes direct from set pieces.

Drogheda make the long trip to face Derry City at the Brandywell Stadium next Saturday.

Goal. 12 minutes. Callum Leonard.
