The Drogs Under 17s went down to their first defeat in the League at Gortakeegan on Saturday. After their good display against Finn Harps in the opening match they were looking forward to building on this momentum. The Drogs started well and could have been 2 goals up in the opening minutes. First Jamie Fagan had a shot from close in blocked out and then Arturs Balavins shot narrowly wide from a good position. Disaster struck after 8 minutes however when defender Sam O’Brien was adjudged to have committed a red card offence as he tussled with his opponent.
The home side took the lead shortly after this reverse as the Drogs were adjusting their 10 man formation and added to this lead on 12 minutes from a free at the touchline which was headed home by the home striker. Despite this reverse, the Drogs continued to play football and had the majority of possession but couldn’t make it count and the home side made it 2-0 on the half hour and went 3-0 down at shortly after that through a disputed penalty.
The Drogs came out for the second half and dominated possession, kept their shape and tried really hard, but conceded a breakaway goal to the home side before the finish.
Despite this reverse, manager John Donohue expressed himself happy with the Drogs performance ‘There was really nothing we could do about the sending-off, but the players acquitted themselves playing with 10 men and dominated possession for most of the match. Their fitness and commitment is second to none and we’re looking forward to Bohs at home next week’
