Drogheda United will be aiming to avoid a Cup upset when they travel to face Evergreen FC in the First Round of the FAI Cup on Sunday, kick-off 2pm.
A 1-0 loss at home to league leaders Cork City last Friday leaves the Drogs nine points adrift of safety with only eight games remaining.
They will put their league struggles to one side on Sunday with Drogheda boss Pete Mahon adamant that his side will be taking nothing for granted.
“It hasn’t been easy scouting Evergreen as they’re out of season but we’ve had a few DVDs to look at,” Mahon explained Saturday afternoon. “We need to show up tomorrow and be completely professional. You only have to look at Friday’s games to see what can happen with Shamrock Rovers being taken all the way and Wexford losing.
“We have to make sure that our superior fitness and quality makes the difference. It’s a really good opportunity for us to get a win under our belts but I’ve no doubt that Evergreen will be motivated taking on a League of Ireland side.”
FAI Cup winners in 2005, Mahon will be hoping his side can embark on a Cup run having already been knocked out at the first attempt of both the Leinster Senior Cup and EA Sports Cup.
“It’s no secret that our Cup form over the last few years has been very poor, I don’t think we’ve gotten past the First Round in any of them.
“We need a result to lift the confidence in the squad and really keep our season going. It won’t be easy playing on their all-weather pitch and we are missing a few bodies but there can be no excuses if we don’t progress.”
Thomas Byrne misses out through suspension while Colm Deasy, Kevin Farragher, Sean Brennan, Gavin Brennan and Stephen Elliott are all injured.
Eoghan Dempsey and Jamie Hollywood will be unavailable due to international commitments though new signing Dave Mulcahy is expected to make his debut.
