This Season’s Elite DDSL Under 17 League commences with a ‘Champions League’ -type play off between two sections after which the league will divide into two divisions based on the round robin results.
The Drogs’ first match in this format was against a very strong Shelbourne team and they came out on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat. The visitors were strong and skilful and dominated the match for long periods, but there were plenty of positives for the Drogs based on their second half display.
The Drogs started brightly and took the lead against the run of play in the 10th minute when Jack O’Keefe, who showed great touch throughout, cut in from the left hand side and slotted the ball past the keeper from a narrow angle. But in less than a minute, the visitors were level when a lack of concentration and awareness in the Drogs defence allowed the visitors through for the equaliser. That same concentration deficit resulted in the visitors second goal in the 20th minute.
Shels added two more in the 32nd and 36th minute to lead 4-1 and at that stage it looked like it would be a heavier defeat for the Drogs. But the half-time team talk in the home dressing room resulted in a far better display for the second half, and as time went on Shels faded a bit and the Drogs had chances in the closing minutes, but failed to score.
So, we can take this as part of the learning curve for the Drogs – next match Sunday 14th v. Cabinteely (home).
