Drogheda United exited the Leinster Senior Cup this evening as they were defeated 2-0 by First Division side UCD at the UCD Bowl.
The Drogs were made to pay for their missed chances as a quick-fire double from Cian Kavanagh and John Scales sealed a deserved victory for the hosts.
Drogheda United manager Pete Mahon opted to give Thomas Byrne his competitive debut while Gavin Brennan was the only other new addition to start from last season’s squad.
A quick start from Drogheda saw them create the first clear chance of the contest with Gareth McCaffrey cutting inside before sliding Marc Griffin through only to pull his shot wide.
McCaffrey was involved again on 20 minutes as a move down the right resulted in the ball falling to the forward at the backpost but he volleyed high over the bar from six yards out.
The former Hibernian youth almost turned provider on the stroke of half-time as he picked out the run of Brennan but the winger’s header went wide as the sides went in scoreless at the break.
